This qualification provides competencies to develop systems, select equipment, and commission, maintain and diagnose faults/malfunctions of refrigeration systems and equipment that apply to commercial food storage and preservation and air conditioning and air distribution equipment and special applications. It includes regulatory requirements for purchasing and handling refrigerants.
Pre-Enrolment Information
Prior to enrolment, it is mandatory that students attend a Pre-Enrolment Consultation with one of our approved Education Agents or delegated AIBT staff.
A Pre-Enrolment Consultation session may be provided to a prospective student one or more times to provide the prospective student additional time and/or information to make an informed decision. In addition, the communication channels used for conducting Pre-Enrolment Consultation sessions can be in various forms such as Face-To-Face, Video Conference, telephone call, and email.
Students will be provided with clear and accurate information about their course before enrolment to allow students to make an informed decision.
During this Pre-Enrolment Consultation session, prospective students will be provided with all the relevant course information to help guide them to make a formal decision that will reflect their existing skills and competencies and meet their needs. International students will be provided with a Pre-Enrolment Consultation Checklist and Handout to ensure they understand the support services provided and their obligations as an international student.

In a year, there are two study periods*:
- The 1st study period: from January to May (June Break)
- The 2nd study period: from July to November (December Break)

To achieve a Diploma of Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Engineering, a total of 35 units must be completed:
Thirty-Three (33) core units.
Two (2) elective units
A combination of Elective competency standard units to achieve a total weighting of 130 points in accordance with the Elective Competency Standard Units table within https://training.gov.au/Training/Details/UEE51211
Elective units must be relevant to the work outcome, local industry requirements and the qualification level.

Completion of UEE32211 Cert III in Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration or UEE42711 Cert IV in Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Servicing or be able to demonstrate equivalent competency.
A minimum of IELTS 5.5 or equivalent is required.
International Students who do not meet the English language requirements for this course may undertake English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) according to the English Learning Matrix.

Each state and territory has different requirements in relation to Australian context gap training and electrical authorisation for the licenced occupation of Airconditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic.
New South Wales
To apply for a refrigerant handling licence and the Provisional Tradesperson Certificate, OTSR holders wishing to work in New South Wales (NSW) must contact:
- the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC),who issue the Trainee Licence (for handling of refrigerant in classroom and workplace), and
- New South Wales Fair Trading who is the regulator responsible for issuing the Provisional Tradesperson Certificate.
IMPORTANT: Both licences are required to work in NSW as an Airconditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic (under supervision).
Holders of a Trainee Licence and a Provisional Tradesperson Certificate must:
- enrol in and complete Australian context gap training, and
- work under the supervision of a current holder of an Airconditioning and Refrigeration Licence or Certificate.
On successful completion of Australian context gap training and supervised employment, applicants are eligible to apply for a Diploma of Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Engineering (UEE51211).
On receipt of the Diploma of Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Engineering (UEE51211), an applicant may apply for a full Refrigerant Handling Licence – Qualified Persons (2 years) with ARC and an Airconditioning and Refrigeration Licence or Certificate with New South Wales Fair Trading.

Refrigerant handling licence
To apply for a refrigerant handling licence, OTSR holders wishing to work in Queensland (QLD) must contact the:
- Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC), who issue the Trainee Licence(for handling of refrigerant in classroom and workplace)
Holders of a Trainee Licence must:
- enrol in and complete Australian context gap training, and
- work under the supervision of a holder of a current and full licence that is related to the refrigeration work that the trainee licence holder is being trained in, for a period up to twelve (12) months.
On successful completion of Australian context gap training and supervised employment, applicants are eligible to apply for a Diploma of Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Engineering (UEE51211).
On receipt of the Diploma of Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Engineering (UEE51211), an applicant may apply for a full Refrigerant Handling Licence – Qualified Persons (2 years).

Electrical work licence
A person who holds an OTSR as an airconditioning and refrigeration mechanic must obtain the Diploma of Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Engineering (UEE51211) before being eligible for a restricted electrical work licence in Queensland. Whilst holding the OTSR and the Trainee Licence, you must have a licensed person carry out the disconnecting, reconnecting and fault finding of any electrical equipment you are required to work on.
On receipt of the Diploma of Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Engineering (UEE51211), you may apply for a restricted electrical work licence. In most cases applicants will be issued with an electrical work training permit and will need to undertake additional on and off the job training to obtain the licence. Refrigeration and Airconditioning work licence
A holder of a Diploma of Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Engineering (UEE51211) and a Refrigerant Handling Licence issued by the ARC is required to apply to the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) for licensing for refrigeration and airconditioning work. Simulated Work Environment
AIBT provides 460 hours per year of simulated training within our Engineering workshops. Simulated training is not equivalent to vocational placement.
Completing all the units of competency within this qualification will lead to the issuance of a Diploma of Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Engineering (UEE51211) and a transcript of academic record. Students that successfully complete individual units of competency, but not the whole qualification, will be eligible to receive a Statement of Attainment detailing the completed units.
