This dual qualification in dental assisting and dental technology reflects the role of a dental technician responsible for construction and repairs of dentures and other dental appliances including crowns, bridges, partial dentures, pre and post-oral and maxillofacial surgical devices and orthodontic appliances. Their role includes maintaining high standards of infection control, assisting with practice administration and supporting quality and professionalism in the dental sector.

Students will be required to undertake a total of 400 unpaid placement hours.

Academic requirement:
Successful completion of Australian Year 12 or Australian equivalent is mandatory.
English requirement:

A minimum of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent is required.

International Students who do not meet the English language requirements for this course may undertake English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) according to the English Learning Matrix.

Placement is an essential component of this qualification. Placement consolidates the students’ knowledge within the real health environment, applying theory to practice.

Students will be required to undertake a total of 400 unpaid placement hours.

Total placement hours required for Certificate III in Dental Assisting = 280 Hours * 
Total placement hours required for Diploma of Dental Technology = 280 Hours *

* Please note, 160 hours of completed placement from Certificate III in Dental Assisting can be credited to Diploma of Dental Technology, when completed as a dual qualification.

This means students will need to complete the remaining 120 hours of placement for Certificate III in Dental Assisting + 280 hours of placement required for Diploma of Dental Technology to complete their placement requirements for this dual qualification.

AIBT-I organises student placement. Students will be required to complete given logbook and workplace diary during their placement hours.

All students must be willing to undertake placement in a health care facility during the program. Students are required to organise their own travel to and from these facilities and may be required to undertake placement in regional areas.

Before commencing placement:

Students will be required to complete HLTSAID003 – Provide first aid. AIBT will provide training of this unit at no additional cost to students and on completion will issue students with a Statement of Attainment prior to placement.

Completing all the units of competency within this qualification will lead to the issuance of a Certificate III in Dental Laboratory Assisting (HLT35115) and Diploma of Dental Technology (HLT55115) including a transcript of all completed units. Students that successfully complete individual units of competency, but not the whole qualification, will be eligible to receive a Statement of Attainment detailing the completed units
